Description
Origin : Florida (Clench, Marco Isl.)
Strombus pugilis peculiaris XL mm 70-90 Seashell Gastropoda Sea Snail True Conch, big size, extra colour. Taken at extreme low tide in December of 2002, sand and grass bottom. Common name: The Fighting Conch or The West Indian Fighting Conch. Syn. Pyramis striata, Strombus cornutus, Drillia actinocycla, Strombus nicaraguensis, Strombus sloani, Strombus worki. The scientific name attributed to this species derives from the energetic movements that the animal makes during its movements; these, in fact, are characterized by leaps and lateral rockings, such as to recall in the observer those made by a boxer in a ring. From a historical and fossil point of view, the oldest shells of this mollusk date back to the Eocene. It is generally considered, like other finds of the genus Strombus, an excellent guide fossil for the soils of the Cenozoic.
