Carcharhinidae is a family of sharks of the Carcharhiniformes order. They are also known as gray sharks or reef sharks (although some species are also found in freshwater).
They have a tapered body, a well-equipped mouth with serrated teeth, two dorsal fins, the first anterior to the ventral ones. The caudal fin has a shorter lower lobe than the upper one. Predominantly piscivores. Many species are viviparous.
Some species are aggressive towards humans, such as the shark leuca (Carcharhinus leucas), the longimano (Carcharhinus longimanus) and the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier).
Among the most common species in coral reefs are the gray shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), the black tip shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) and the white tip shark (Triaenodon obesus).
The Carcharhinidae family has 12 genera. The most numerous, the genus Carcharhinus, has 31 species, while other genera, such as Galeocerdo, which present only one species.
