Balistes capriscus, commonly known as Triggerfish or Hogfish, is a sea fish belonging to the Balistidae family.
This species is widespread in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic, in coastal and shallow waters. It inhabits coral reefs, rocky coasts populated by algae (especially Sargassum) and corals, from 0 to -100 meters deep.
The shape is typical, with a rhomboidal body, crescent-shaped tail, powerful and toothed beak.
It reaches a length of 60 cm. It has a rather solitary character, sometimes forming small groups.
They breed once a year, in their mating season. Fertilization is external, the eggs are laid in holes in the sand. It feeds on crustaceans, echinoderms and other invertebrates.
Thanks to its rigid skin, the spines of the fins and the "snap" mechanism of the first dorsal fin (which allows it to get stuck in the cracks of rocks and corals) it usually does not fear attacks from predators.
