Iridescent Turgite 1 Piece 14.1 gr - cm 2.9 x 2.4 x 1.8 Raw Minerals Stones Rocks for Collection, only a piece, as in photo. Originally described from the Turjinskii (or Turginsk) mine in Russia, Turgite is generally considered to be a variety of two more common minerals: Goethite and Hematite. It is actually a mixture of the two minerals due to the alteration of goethite, which is typically found in the botryoidal (globular) habit of the "parent" goethite. Sometimes it appears iridescent. However, because it is a mixture of two minerals, it is not considered a mineral in itself. Goethite is a common iron ore. It is often formed by the breakdown of other iron-rich minerals, so it is a common component of soils. It can form excellent pseudomorphs after the original minerals, especially pyrite or Marcasite. Goethite can also be precipitated from groundwater or other sedimentary conditions, or form as a primary mineral in hydrothermal deposits. When present in sufficient quantities, it constitutes an important iron mineral. Turgite apparently only forms under specific environmental conditions that prevent samples from losing their luster and turning into dull gray hematite.
