Labradorite is a variety of Anorthite with the chemical formula (Na, Ca)(Al, Si)4O8 with traces of Fe, K and H2O. It has a variable hardness between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale, while the density varies between 2.68 and 2.72 g/cm3. The morphology is granular, often in compact blocks.
Labradorite is a feldspar, specifically a member of the plagioclase series, which forms in pegmatites or basic magmas. Its brilliant colors on a grey-green base are due to the refraction effect of light on the lamellar structure, i.e. labradorescence. Its particularity is to possess a play of colors with a metallic reflection normally varying between blue and green, but in the best specimens it can show the whole spectrum of colours.
Labradorite is used in jewelery to make ornamental objects, but it is especially used in the gemological field, as a semi-precious stone, often cut into cabochons, but in some cases also into facets.
Main deposits: Canada (Labrador Peninsula), Scandinavian Peninsula, Madagascar.
