Silver is the chemical element in the periodic table which has the symbol Ag (from the Latin Argentum) and atomic number 47. It is the second element of group 11 of the periodic system (located between copper and gold).
It is a transition metal and is found in nature both pure and in mineral form. It is used in coinage, photography and jewelry.
Silver is a very ductile and malleable soft metal, slightly harder than gold, with a white metallic sheen that is enhanced by polishing. It has the greatest electrical conductivity of all metals, even higher than that of copper which, however, is more widespread due to its lower cost.
Pure silver, among the metals, also has the highest thermal conductivity, the whitest color and the lowest impact resistance. Silver is so malleable that sheets as thin as 30 μm can be made.
Silver occurs in nature both natively and combined in compounds with sulfur, arsenic, antimony, or chlorine in a variety of minerals (for example, argentite, Ag2S, or silver pyrite, AgFe2S3).
Deposits of silver are found in Canada, Australia and the United States but the maximum production in the last two centuries has been in Mexico from the Guanajuato mine. Mexico is the world's leading producer of silver, with 186.2 million ounces produced in 2016, followed by Peru and China. In Italy, silver was extracted in Calabria and Sardinia in various deposits of the Sarrabus.
In addition to minerals, silver is also obtained from the electrolytic refining of copper.
Commercial grade silver is 99.9% pure, purity grades up to 99.999% are available.
