Gold is the chemical element with atomic number 79 and its symbol is Au (from the Latin aurum). It is a soft, heavy, ductile, malleable transition metal with a yellow color due to the absorption of blue wavelengths from incident light.
Unaffected by most chemical compounds, it practically reacts only with aqua regia and cyanide ion. With mercury it forms an amalgam, but not a chemical compound. It is found in its native state in the form of nuggets, grains and flakes in rocks and alluvial deposits.
It has been used since ancient times to mint coins and as a countervalue for the currency issues of the States. It is also used in jewellery, dentistry and in the electronics industry.
It is the most ductile and malleable metal known; one gram of gold can be struck in a plate whose area is one square metre. It is a soft metal and to give it greater mechanical strength it is alloyed with other metals. It appears green when reduced to a very fine sheet.
In its native state it is often accompanied by a fraction of silver (8%-10%). As the silver content increases, the color of the metal becomes whiter and its density decreases.
Gold alloys with many other metals: alloys with copper are reddish, with iron green, with aluminum purplish, with platinum white, with bismuth and silver blackish.
It is an excellent conductor of electricity, the best among metals after silver and copper but, unlike the latter, it is not very susceptible to oxidation phenomena, therefore it is used for contacts or conductors of microscopic dimensions.
Gold is found associated with quartz, often in veins, and with mineral sulphides. The sulfides which are most often associated with are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, stibnite and pyrrhotite.
Gold is distributed widely throughout the earth's crust, with an average concentration of 0.03 ppm (0.03 grams per ton). Deposits of gold minerals are found in metamorphic rocks and igneous rocks, from which alluvial gold deposits are formed by leaching.
The most common primary deposits are called "veins". The primary deposits are eroded and washed away by the weather; the gold is carried downstream forming alluvial deposits.
In marine water, gold is present in a concentration close to 1.3 mg per ton. The total amount of gold present in the oceans is therefore about 20 million tons, but the very low concentration makes its extraction uneconomical at the moment. It is estimated that in 2001 there was a total quantity of gold in circulation equal to 140,000 t, which can be represented as a cube with sides of about 20 m.
