It is a typical mineral of evaporitic origin, where it is formed by direct precipitation from supersaturated waters. It is able to grow in colorless or translucent crystals even of considerable size, the object of collecting, of which the most common type is the desert rose. There are numerous places with gypsum deposits, especially in Germany, France and Italy, but also in Austria, in Polish territory, in Turkmenistan and in various US deposits. In Italy it is found in small crystals especially in various areas of the north, but also in Carrara, at Mt. Argentario and in almost all the mines of Sicily associated with sulfur. Lance iron twin crystals come from the Fiorini quarry in Farneto (Italy, Bologna).
