Before 1997, the Stilbite was recognized as a distinct species of mineral, but a reclassification in 1997 has split the name in Stilbite-Ca and Stilbite-Na. The Stilbite-Ca, by far the most common of the two, is a calcium sodium hydroxide and aluminum silicate, while in the case of Stilbite-Na, sodium dominates on calcium. The species are visually indistinguishable, and the generic name Stilbite is still used every time the identification test was not performed. The Stilbite and Heulandite were once considered the same mineral. After they are found to be two distinct species in 1818, the term desmine ("a bundle") was proposed for Stilbite, and this name is still used in Germany. The English name "Stilbite" comes from greek and means to shine, because the luster of pearl faces. The Tertiary basalts of the Deccan of western India are the most prolific sources of Stilbite worldwide.
