The jaietto or gagat is a mineraloid of vegetable origin. It is a variety of lignite, in gloss black. It is used in jewelry for rings, earrings, bracelets. Through a system of brushing and cleaning acquires a gloss that does not decrease with time. In the area of Asturiana Villaviciosa (Spain), together with that of Whitby (England), it seems the jaietto has better quality.
The Italian "giaietto", derived from the Latin "Lapis Gagates" or, more simply, "Gagates", or Gagi Stone. This was the name of a river (Latin for "Gages") of Lycia in Asia Minor. Is also called black amber, however, the jaietto is not a fossil resin but a mineral similar to coal, only harder, even if it can somehow remember the amber.
The jaietto was once used as a source for obtaining black pearls.
