Ruby is the noblest monocrystalline variety of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), a highly allochromatic mineral known as corundum. It has hardness 9 on the Mohs scale. It has a bright red colour, due to chromium inclusions, but can take on various shades of this colour, ranging from the brightest red, also called "pigeon's blood", to pink (typical of metamorphic rocks generated by contact metamorphism of aluminum and dolomitic marble sediments). Given the high hardness, one of the typical locations is the secondary one in alluvial deposits. Its dimensions are usually not exceptional and are closely related to transparency; for this reason, clear rubies weighing more than 10 carats are considered exceptional. Always based on the quality, various types of cuts are used. Ruby is a very rare gem and in ancient times other red colored gems were often mistaken for rubies until modern gemological means allowed a more accurate analysis of the crystal type. The deposits present in Tanzania, Madagascar, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam are famous, however those considered to be of maximum value come from the Mogok mines in Burma.
