Larimar , also known as the "Stefilia Stone", is a rare blue variety of pectolite (an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium) that is found only in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Its color varies from white, blue, green - blue to deep blue, for the replacement of calcium with copper . Its origin dates back to the Miocene (15-20 million years ago) from volcanic events followed by alluvial erosion and sedimentation. The most important outcrop of blue pectolite is located in Los Chupaderos, in the section of Los Checheses, about 10 kilometers southwest of the city of Barahona, in the south-western region of the Dominican Republic. It is a single mountain now perforated with approximately 2,000 vertical shafts, surrounded by rainforest and deposits of blue sterile mineral origin. The Larimar jewelry are offered to the public in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere in the Caribbean as a local specialty. Most of the jewelry products are combined with the silver, but sometimes the larimar high quality is worked with gold.
