The species is widespread in most of Europe, until in Mongolia and Korea, and North Africa (Algeria and Morocco). At the beginning of the 21st century, the species was introduced in the United States, where locally can reproduce in large populations, annoyingly penetrating into homes.
The species has colonized various semiombrosi habitats and is also less tied to coniferous trees of other similar species, so it was often found even at the edges of deciduous forests or land of shrubs and in those arable.
It feeds on seeds, that stings with its trunk and sucks. His seed diet includes a variety of species of plants, including strawberry, nettle, wormwood, elms, poplars and many more. What goes into hibernation, you can often find in large aggregations under the bark of dead wood. It winters in August or September and often into homes, where it can remain active throughout the winter.
