Scolia sp. cm 4.5-5 wing span cm 5.5-6 Insect Solitary Mammuth Wasp Giant Tropical Horner Parasitoid Hymenopterus Scoliidae. Family: Scoliidae. Common name: Wasp Mammuth. Scolia is a genus of wasps with over 200 recognized species. Scolia was described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775. This genus is classified under the tribe Scoliini of the subfamily Scoliinae within the family Scoliidae. Scolia is further divided into three subgenera, Scolia, Discolia, and Hesperoscolia. The species are usually black with variable yellow or red markings. Most bristles are usually black or white, but may also be mixed with red or yellow. Scolia is a cosmopolitan genus. 40 species are known from India alone. Another 50 species are known from the Palearctic. Another 20 species are known from the Americas. Many tropical species are particularly large.
