Bombus pratirum is a small bumblebee with a wide distribution throughout much of Europe and some parts of Asia.
It emerges to begin its cycle as soon as February, before most other species, hence its common name. Like other bumblebees, Bombus pratirum lives in colonies with queens and workers. Bombus pratirum queens use aggressive behavior rather than pheromones to maintain dominance over workers.
The bumblebee's head is rounded and the proboscis is short.; the queen has a body length of 15–17 mm, the worker 10-14 mm and the male 11-13 mm. Shortly after their appearance, the workers are distinguished by a silver color before quickly changing to the normal colors of foraging bees (a similar appearance to the queen with the central yellow band missing).
