Tabanus bovinus cm 2-2.5 Insect Horse-Fly True Horse Fly Gadfly Breeze-Fly Hematophagus Dipterus Brachycera.
Family: Tabanidae.
Common name: Pale Giant Gorse-Fly.

This biting horsefly (Tabanus bovinus, Linnaeus 1758) is a Diptera insect of the family Tabanidae. It's like a big fly, stockier and large (up to 2.5 cm), gray and yellowish with big eyes.
The females are hematophagous, ie they feed on animal blood, while the males are herbivores (feed on the sap of flowers and vegetable juices). Its sting is painful and cause swelling and itching because the apparatus is quite large and also injures the nerves. It can suck up 0.2 ml of blood and can sting through clothing. The gadfly lives mainly in the shade: on pastures, meadows, woods and barns, where it can find the animals whose blood feeds, from May to August. It is particularly active in the dog days with high humidity.
