Luciola italica  male mm 5-9 Insect Coleopter Firefly Lightning Bug Glowworm Lamphyridae.
Family: Lamphyridae (fireflies)

ATTENTION: we are not a pet shop, the fireflies we sell, like all our animals, are dead, dried, collectible, they don't live to fill your lanterns!

Unlike the genus Lampyris, also present in Italy, the glowworms of the genus Luciola do not have a marked sexual dimorphism, but can still be easily recognized.
The males are winged, with a long and slender body, and can be longer than one centimeter. They can fly about a meter from the ground or settle on stems. The females, more rare, are also winged, but the body is more stocky and short and are frequently found on the ground, perhaps they are just hidden from the grass. The pronot, in both sexes, does not completely cover the head and may present a central reddish stain. The elytra are dark brown and cover the whole body. In the ventral part, the terminal part of the abdomen is white, and here the light is produced.
Three species of the genus Luciola:
- Luciola italica (Linnaeus, 1767) (Italy, Western Balkans);
- Luciola lusitanica (Charpentier, 1825) (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Balkans, Southern Russia);
- Luciola novaki (Müller, 1946) (Western Balkans).
