Dorcus titanus yasuokai cm 8-8.5 Stag Beetle Tropical Insect Coleopter Lucanidae.
Common name: Giant Stag Beetle.

Dorcus titanus, also known as Giant Stag Beetle, is a coleopter of Lucanidae family. It was described in 1835 by Boisduval.
The males measure may exceed 10 cm, including the jaws. The head is so big that can reach almost the length of the pro-thorax and abdomen combined.
Adults are found between May and August. They feed on the sap of trees, especially those species of Quercus. The females lay their eggs in the root system of oak falls. The eggs hatch in about a month, and the larvae feed on rotten wood. The larval period lasts about a year. The complete life cycle can last about 1 to 2 years. This species is present in Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, India, China, Taiwan and Korea.
Inhabits the tropical rainforests and temperate forests especially, from the plains to the mountains.
There are some Asian cultures that assign aphrodisiac properties of this insect, the high protein content. It is also used as an exotic pet.
There are known 19 subspecies.
