It has spread throughout southern Europe and in the mountainous areas of northern Africa. In Italy it is common in all the chestnut and oak woods. The larvae damage the chestnuts and acorns causing fruit drop. The extent of the damage, the chestnut, varies according to the variety and arrangement of the spines of the hedgehog: the varieties with short spines and with sparse or parties without thorns are more susceptible to infestation.
