The fox moth (Macrothylacia rubi Linnaeus, 1758) is a moth belonging to the Lasiocampidae family, widespread in Eurasia.
The adult moth has a fairly uniform light brown color. It has a wingspan ranging from 40 mm to 65 mm, but can reach up to 70 mm. The male flies both at night and during the day, while the female only at night and is easily attracted to light sources. Sex is distinguishable from the color (that of the male is more lively and that of the female is more gray) and the shape of the antennae, which are larger in the male.
At the larval stage (caterpillar) M.rubi appears as a caterpillar of 6-8 cm of length, black and whitish in color on the belly and brown-orange on the back. Its body is entirely covered with bristles which give it a soft and fluffy appearance. They can be seen in their habitat between July and October and between March and April, while in the autumn and winter months they take refuge under the ground and fall into a state of hibernation. The main plants on which the larva feeds belong to the genera Calluna, Rubus, Quercus, Fragaria, Trifolium and Medicago. Its varied diet can lead the species to become a pest
The pupa is an anus chrysalis of about 4 cm in length. Initially it appears green, then within 24 hours it takes on a very dark brown color, tending to black.
