About 60 miles south of Casablanca are the world's largest phosphate reserves. The three largest phosphate reserves are in the Ouled Abdoun Basin of the Atlas Mountains near the town of Khouribga.
Phosphate deposits are formed by chemical precipitation of phosphate from seawater in areas rich in nutrients and animal remains. As a result, fossils of marine animals are usually found within phosphate deposits.
The phosphate deposits around the Khouribga region were deposited over a period of 25 million years, from the Late Cretaceous to the Middle Eocene, when the area was on the ocean floor. During the excavation of phosphate, layers of rock containing fossils are destroyed, including Cretaceous mosasaurs and Eocene Otodus teeth.
These fossils are unfortunately considered a byproduct of mining operations, and because the mining is so large-scale, there are countless fossils recovered by locals. The rocks usually come out in small pieces and the fossils are often broken. This is why only isolated teeth are found and not entire mosasaur skeletons. Fossil dealers in the area often collect the most complete ones or put them in a fake matrix for better presentation. In the United States, fossil dealers often buy shark and mosasaur teeth in bulk from Morocco and then sift through them, looking for the few intact and unrepaired ones.
These deposits mostly contain fossils of the teeth of various sharks and mosasaurs, giant marine reptiles up to 15 meters long. Along with the many types of mosasaurs and sharks, there is another long-necked marine reptile called Elasmosaurus. There are also Pterosaurs (mostly teeth), countless fish such as the Echodus lybicus (or Sabre-toothed Herring), numerous other sharks and crocodiles. There are even scant remains of dinosaurs including an albelisaur and a titanosaur.
