Murex is a genus of medium to large predatory tropical sea snails. These are carnivorous marine gastropod molluscs of the Muricidae family, commonly called rock snails. The word murex was used by Aristotle in reference to this type of snail, thus making it one of the oldest classical shell names still in use by the scientific community. This genus is known in the fossil record from the Cretaceous to the Quaternary (age range: 125.45 to 0.0 million years ago). Fossils of species belonging to this genus have been found all over the world. There are approximately 25 known extinct species. This genus includes many showy members, their elongated shells highly sculptured with spines or fronds. The internal surfaces of their decorated shells are often brightly colored.
