Dastilbe is an extinct genus of prehistoric bony fish. It had an average length of 25-60 mm, reaching a maximum length of around 150 millimetres. The larger individuals of this predatory fish fed on small fish and were probably also cannibals. It was probably an anadromous fish (fish that live most of the time in salt water and reproduce in fresh water), tolerant to hypersalinity and subjected to frequent mass mortality. Dastilbe was a primitive fish of the order Gonorynchiformes, widespread in Gondwana, the supercontinent believed to have existed for about 330 million years, approximately 510 to 180 million years ago. Fossils of this fish were found in the Aptian plateau of the Early Cretaceous period of northeastern Brazil and Africa. Known species: Dastilbe elongatus Silva Santos 1947 Dastilbe crandalli Jordan 1910
