Camphor, with chemical formula C10H16O, is a cyclic ketone, produced by the oxidation of a terpene, pinene. Camphor is a waxy, white or transparent substance with a strong aromatic odor. It is found in several vegetables, but is mainly extracted from the wood of Cinnamomum camphora (Laurus camphora), a large evergreen tree, and some other vegetables. It can also be produced synthetically from turpentine oil. It is used for its perfume, as an ingredient in cooking (Idia), in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Camphor is also found in basil, coriander, marjoram, rosemary and sage. Camphor was known in the Arabian Peninsula already in pre-Islamic times, used as a flavoring for drinks and in recipes throughout the Muslim world. Modern uses include camphor as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose, as a moth repellent, as an antimicrobial substance, in embalming, in fireworks, explosives. Solid camphor releases vapors that form an anti-rust coating. Camphor crystals are also used to prevent damage to insect collections by other small insects. Camphor is especially dangerous if ingested; in extreme cases, even local application of camphor can lead to hepatotoxicity. In 1980 the United States Food and Drug Administration placed a limit of 11% of allowable camphor in consumer products and completely banned products labeled as camphor oil, camphor oil, camphor liniment and camphorated liniment. Because alternative treatments exist, the medicinal use of camphor is discouraged by the FDA, except for skin-related uses, such as medicinal powders, which contain only small amounts of camphor.
