Salicylic Acid is a colorless crystalline carboxylic acid, synthesized by the Kolbe method. It is identified as a plant hormone. Foods naturally rich in salicylic acid are apricots, red and black currants, chicory, oranges, pineapple and raspberries.
It is toxic if ingested in large quantities, but if used in appropriate quantities it is useful for storing food and acts as an antiseptic in toothpaste.
Salicylic acid is the essential component of some products for the treatment of the skin and in particular for the treatment of acne, keratosis pilaris and warts. It can also be used in cases of psoriasis in order to eliminate scaling and therefore facilitate topical treatment.
The healing properties of salicylic acid have been known since ancient times, so much so that the substance was extracted from the willow plant, from which the name derives. Starting from 800 extracts of salicin, a glycoside formed from glucose and salicylic acid, they have been used in medicine as an anti-inflammatory in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Subsequently several derivatives have been synthesized, which constitute the class of salicylates, of which the best known is acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin).
It is also used in taxidermy in embalming techniques.
