Borax Sodium Borate 1000 gr Powdered Salt for Embalming Taxidermic Preparations Vertebrate Antiseptic Disinfectant. Borax or sodium tetraborate, formerly known as tinkal or Venetian borax, is an important compound of boron. The most known forms are anhydrous sodium tetraborate and sodium decahydrate tetraborate; the latter is a soft white crystal, which dissolves easily in water, and if left exposed to dry air slowly loses the hydration water to become a white chalky substance. Borax sold commercially is usually completely dehydrated. Borax was brought to Europe by Marco Polo and resulted in the development of a refining industry in the Venice area where the so-called Venetian borax was produced. Borax is found naturally in evaporite deposits produced by the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes. Borax can also be produced synthetically from other boron compounds, but normally the opposite occurs, ie most boron compounds are produced from borax. Borax is used extensively in detergents, water softeners, soaps, disinfectants and insecticides. It can also be easily converted into boric acid or borate, which has many other applications. In pharmacopoeia, boric acid is used as a light antiseptic for sprinkling and cleaning the eyes. Borax is a substance that at high temperature turns into an insulating glass and therefore its main use is as an adjuvant paste paste. In the same way it is used to create an insulating glass layer on earthenware earthenware. It is used in the production of enamel, glass and pottery in reinforced ceramic. In photography borax is used as an alkaline substance for the composition of fine-grained development baths for black and white film. In metallurgy it was used to limit the oxidation of steel when heated to high temperatures. The compound is harmful to fertility and category 2 as it is irritating to the eyes. Food additives are identified by the abbreviation E 285.
