Acetone (also called 2-propanone or dimethyl ketone) is the simplest ketone. Acetone is a mobile, colorless, volatile and flammable liquid with a characteristic ethereal but slightly harsh odor; it is completely soluble in water, ethanol and ether and is mainly used as a general purpose solvent. Acetone is also used in cosmetics to remove nail polish. A minimal amount applied with a wad of cotton wool easily accomplishes the purpose. As a highly polar solvent, it also has some effectiveness in removing cyanoacrylate adhesive residues. It is also used in the laboratory as an organic solvent and as an aid in drying laboratory glassware after washing it. The main use of this solvent is for the production of polymers, polycarbonates (impact-resistant plastics, such as those for motorcycle helmets) and other rubber solvents, some paints, paint additives, adhesives, varnishes, and to dissolve some plastics.
