Cellophane is a thin and transparent film made of cellulose hydrate.
Invented in 1908 in Switzerland, it is a widely used material for food packaging and wrapping as it is resistant to air, water (only after the lacquering process, which gives it resistance and moisture barrier properties), and is also biodegradable and compostable. The manufacturing process consists of passing viscose through a thin slit placed in an acid bath: the viscose transforms into a film of cellulose. In a similar way, by passing the viscose through small holes, long threads of artificial fibers such as rayon can be obtained. The term cellophane, which has become a commonly used term, was created by Brandenberger from the union of the words "cellulose" and "diaphane" (diaphane, which allows light to pass through and allows one to see through it).
